Moons Ridge looks like an exciting story. Can you tell us a little about it?
Absolutely, it’s the story of a small vampire coven who has complete control over a town (Moons Ridge) on the distant edge of a fictional continent known as the Grand Star. These vampires, or Vampros, treat the town's people like cattle, feeding on them generation after generation. The narrative is told from various points of view from the human protagonists and even some of the vampires. There are various conflicts that ensue, all eventually culminating in the attempted awakening of their ultimate baddie. The vampire Empress, known as Danicos. So…There’s a lot happening.
Any plans to turn it into a series?
Yes! In fact, I was attempting to write a stand-alone book that kept growing and took on a bigger life than I had originally planned. So, I am writing the second part right now. As I kept on creating this land and its people…the world building has just gotten so massive. I would definitely like to write more books in this series if the first two are well received, even a few spin-off books too.
That’s an amazing cover. Can you tell us a little about it?
Thank you! I wanted something kind of simple that gave an impression of the book without revealing much. There are a lot of knights and some troublemaking beasts being killed in the story. I felt that a sword with some blood on it was a decent symbol of that. I’m still deciding on what I want the book's counterpart cover to be… There is also a warrior or leader character that is one of the focal points in the novel. The sword is a good representation of her strength; I think.
What inspired you when writing Moons Ridge?
My inspiration originally came from my childhood love of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. I am always writing various stories about this and that and came up with this neat idea about a vampire queen who keeps a whole town in fear. In Dracula, the town's people kind of…co-exist with the count. He is this dark force that is always there, and the village just has to deal with it. They can’t leave or kill him, so… They warn others who come into the evil web. That type of thing really intrigued me.
Can you tell us a little about Grand Star?
It’s a vast continent in a much bigger world. It isn’t directly expressed in this book, but the people don’t utilize any ships to explore other lands or continents because of the dangers involved. Many sailors have tried traversing the enormous oceans in this world and never come back. So by and large, the humans just stay where they are at. I hope to expand on that idea in the future too.
Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when writing Moons Ridge?
The world building. But that’s always difficult. An author has to suspend disbelief by creating towns and different unique cultures that these characters actually believe exist. One has to keep detailed notes and start thinking of these things as proper places and then expand on those ideas while obeying rules you create. It can get tough sometimes.
What do you like to do when not writing?
Spend time with my dogs and family. Life can get stressful so, it’s nice to sit back and just zone out sometimes. I am a huge gamer too. So, video games help keep my sanity!
