After the bombs fell looks like an exciting
story. Can you tell us a little about it?
For sure! After the bombs
fell is a dystopian fiction novel, taking place after a nuclear war wiped out
most of the planet. A large surviving colony of humans is the Nation, a city where
the human race tries to survive by any means necessary. This includes the main
character, Ve Klein.
What can you tell us about Ve?
Ve is a young woman living
in the Nation who has always been on her own. She lost her parents at a young
age and whereas all but a few women get
assigned a husband she never married a husband through the Nation regime. As the days pass by through a horrible
nuclear winter, Ve's future drastically changes when somebody close to her
comes to an unexpected decision. She is forced to choose between the only
people she has ever called family before or a new, prosperous life within the
Nation.
Any plans to turn it into a series?
Yes, there is a sequel to the
book already out on amazon called After the train left and a third and
final book is in the works! There have been some delays due to the pandemic and
my personal life, but I hope to get the third book out early next year!
How long did it take you to write After the bombs fell?
The first draft was
written in 2017, so in total it took two years to end from an idea into a
completed book.
That’s an amazing cover.
Can you tell us a little about it?
The cover was made by an
Ukranian artist called Oliviaprodesign! She also made the cover for my second
book and I hope we can work together again for the third and final book as she
managed to put my ideas into these amazing covers so quickly!
What motivated you to become a writer?
Since I was a little kid I
have always enjoyed reading and writing stories. I handwrote my first little
novel when I was seven years old. Unfortunately our local library would not
take it, haha!
Although I never thought I
would be doing it as a fulltime job, I never stopped writing from that moment
on and After the bombs fell is the first time I felt comfortable and
proud sharing my writing with the world.
How did you come up with the story and ideas in After
the bombs fell?
I studied in the UK at the time
and lived across from a row of Tower Blocks that I looked at from the desk of
my dorm room. Apocalyptic stories have always intrigued me and the very rugged
style of the Tower Blocks – very sorry to the city of Dundee – kinda lead me
into how the city should look and from there a world, story and characters
began to grow!
Did anything stick out as particularly challenging when
writing After the bombs fell?
English is not my first
language, as I am from the Netherlands. I started writing in English years
before writing After the bombs fell but even then writing in a second
language can be challenging! Luckily I got a lot of great help from some
amazing people.
What do you like to do when not writing?
I work in IT and spend a
lot of time on and off the clock tinkering with computers and studying up on
the latest trends in technology. Besides that I stay active by running and
hiking and I love traveling all over the world. Now that the world is opening
up again I hope to see many more amazing places in the next few years!
Where can readers find out more about your work?
I have a Facebook page (Elyzabeth
Johanna) and an account on Instagram (@ElyzabethJohannaWriter) where I post all
updates on my books!
