The
Weight of Rope Is an intelligently
written thriller that is loads of fun to read. Evelyn (Evie) and
Gertrude (Gee) are best friends. They have a lot in common
(depression, alcohol) and a lot not in common. Gee tries to be a
dutiful wife to a jerk and see the good in everyone while Evie is
single, a free thinker and says whatever’s on her mind. They’re
drawn to each other nevertheless. After years of deep friendship, Gee
must break off contact to please her husband after her marriage
becomes in jeopardy.
A year passes and
out of the blue, Gee phones Evie and asks to meet the next morning.
She never shows up and appears to have just disappeared off the face
of the earth. None of Gee’s family members seem concerned. After
Evie sees that the husband’s mistress has been installed at Gee’s
house, she is determined to find out what happened to her friend. A
police detective gets involved and the story twists and turns as
secrets and shocking lies are revealed. The author, Mickey Ann, has
written a smart, lively novel that is almost impossible to put down.
